This thesis entitled “BDSM (Bondage, Dominance, Subsmissive and
Sadomasochism) as Grey’s Defense Mechanism in E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of
Grey” aims to analyze the defense mechanism that is depicted in the character of
Christian Grey and how the mechanisms come out in a form of BDSM practices.
The research uses qualitative method to analyze the data. The main data source of
this research is Fifty Shades of Grey novel which is analyzed by using Sigmund
Freud’s defense mechanism theory and BDSM theory.
There are three types of defense mechanism used to explain Christian
Grey’s attachment to BDSM and how these mechanisms help him to cope with
the situations that raise his anxiety and negative emotions. In addition, BDSM
theory focuses to explain in detail of BDSM practices in Fifty Shades of Grey
work.
In result,there are three formsof defense mechanism that are depicted in
Christian Grey, namely: repression, undoing and displacement. The repression
explains how his past experience, when he is sexually seduced becomes latent and
makes him dominant in his today’s life. The undoing mechanism happens when
he violates his own promises to not practice BDSM until the agreement with
Anastasia Steele is officially signed. Last one, displacement occurs when
Christian Grey is placing his negative emotions from work’s pressure to Anastasia
Steele as theobject to release his tension through BDSM practice.
