This research is conducted to describe the significant differences of two
versions of translation of the book of Soekarno an Autobiography as Told to
Cindy Adams published in 1966 and 2014. Then, the researcher analyzes how the
translator’s neutrality in translating the text is reflected in the translated version.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research using the technique of
collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. It is then followed by drawing
conclusion based on the data analyses. The researcher uses purposive sampling as
the sampling technique. The sources of the data were taken from the book entitled
Soekarno an Autobiography as Told to Cindy Adams in English version as the ST,
and two versions of translations published in 1966 as the TT 1 translated by Major
Abdul Bar Salim and 2014 as the TT 2 translated by Syamsul Hadi. There were 24
data found in terms of paragraphs.
The analysis showed that there are two significant differences between TT
1 and TT 2. The first is related to the technique used by the translator. The data
showed that there are 8 units of additions of paragraph in TT 1, 2 units of
additions of paragraphs in TT 2, and 1 unit of addition – omission of paragraph in
TT 1. It means that the technique of addition is apparently used in TT 1.
Meanwhile, the technique of omission is apparently used in TT 2. Yet, the
technique of addition – omission is only used in TT 1. The second difference
found in the translation is the number of distorted translation. There are 8
distorted translations in TT 1 and there are 2 distorted translations in TT 2. The
distorted translation in TT 1 mostly provides irrelevant information, provocative
message and deviant messages of the ST. In contrast, the distortion in TT 2 is
because of information omission of Soekarno’s heroic action for Indonesia. Thus,
distorted translation occurred is the more complex and more dominant in TT 1.
The researcher concludes that the translation of TT 2 is more accurate and more
equivalent than TT 1. Therefore, the translator of TT 2 is more neutral than the
translator of TT 1.
The result of this research can be used hopefully as an additional reference
on how to be a neutral translator. It can also be used as a supporting material in
developing and enriching the knowledge of English Department students and the
other researchers.
