Furthermore, the researcher uses Swingewood‟s sociology of literature theory and
theory of totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt to analyze the totalitarian government that
reflected in Boyne‟s novel. The researcher only focuses on the character and setting
in the novel. The result of this research shows that the characteristics of totalitarian government that Hannah Arendt mentioned in her book, The Origins of Totalitarianism, are reflected in Boyne‟s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Those characteristics are absolute control, propaganda, terror, and violence. The party should be powerful to take the absolute control above the country.
