Abstrak :
News headline is the most influential part in printed and online news. Readers firstly read the news headlines and they decide whether they will read the whole news or not. However, the news headlines have a distinctive structure from others, they often omit some words. This research is conducted to find the type of ellipsis and to describe the reason why certain ellipsis are commonly found in Jakarta Globe’s online news headline. The research used descriptive qualitative study in analyzing the data. The data source of the research is Jakarta Globe’s online news headline. The data were analyzed by using Quirk’s theory (1985).
Later, the reason why news headline applies certain ellipsis was described by relating it to the news headline language. The result of the research shows that there are 39 data belong to operator ellipsis, 37 data belong to determiner ellipsis, 16 data belong to conjunction ellipsis, and 3 data belong to pronoun ellipsis. Moreover, the reason is described as follows: firstly, determiner ellipsis is used to give sense of generality without offering the specific one by omitting the article from the noun phrase. Secondly, operator ellipsis is used to give emphatic sense. Thirdly, conjunction and pronoun ellipsis is used to create simplicity in order to save the limited space.
