This practice report is entitled “The Process of Translating a Short Story The Judge’s House by Bram Stoker”. This short story is a horror fiction. It is taken from Kumpulan Cerita Pendek Bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia arranged by Muslihudin. Several points discussed in this report are the meaning of translation, the steps of translation, the strategies of translation, the obstacles during the translation process, and the solutions to solve them.
Translation is an attempt to find equivalents from a source languange into a target language by looking for the meaning easier to understand. The accuracy of the message and meaning must be delivered well. The steps of translation done were reading the text to analyze it, translating new words, translating the text as a whole, restructuring, and revising the translation. In addition, the writer also asked for a proofreader’s help.
During translating this text, the writer encountered several obstacles: the writer’s knowledge of the source language was limited so that finding the exact equivalents from the source language into the target language was sometimes difficult. Then the writer found a solution to solve the problems, that was by reading the text repeatedly to make it more understandable so that the writer can translate it easily. Besides, the writer also used high quality manual dictionaries to find the exact equivalents of difficult words. When the writer still encountered difficulties in finding them, the writer asked about the words to a proof reader who had linguistic or translation background. In addition the writer also refered the difficult words to the internet and adjusted the context to the more appropriate language style, so that the translation were not awkward.
