Abstrak :
The research entitled “An Analysis of Subtitling Strategy and Readability
of the Subtitle in Begin Again movie” was aimed to analyze the subtitling strategy
by the subtitler in translating Begin Again movie into Indonesian and to know
how the readability of the translation itself.
The research is a descriptive qualitative research which analyzes the
subtitling strategy by the subtitler in Begin Again movie. Dan’s utterances are the
primary data source of the research. There were 81 data found in this source
(Dan’s utterances). The data were analyzed using the theory of subtitling strategy
by Gottlieb which included expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation,
transcription, dislocation, condensation, decimation, deletion, resignation. The
secondary data were taken from the result of questionnaire given by 10 reviewers
in measuring the readability of the subtitle.
The result of the research shows that in total, there are 81 Dan’s utterances
that contain subtitling strategy. The classifications are as follows: expansion
strategy (14 utterances), paraphrase strategy (5 utterances), transfer (strategy 16
utterances), imitation strategy (7 utterances), transcription strategy (6 utterances),
dislocation strategy (3 utterances), condensation strategy (4 utterances),
decimation strategy (14 utterances), and deletion strategy (12 utterances). Thus,
the most frequent data in subtitling strategy is transfer strategy with 16 data.
The result of questionnaire distributed to 10 reviewers shows that the data
are mostly readable. Out of 81 data 67 data are readable, 12 data are less readable,
and only 2 data are unreadable. In brief, it can be concluded that Begin Again
subtitle belongs to readable subtitle, with appropriate strategies applied to make
the subtitle readable by Indonesian viewers.
