Abstrak :
The research entitled “An Analysis of Pronouns as Persuasive Devices Used in Emma Watson’s HeForShe Campaign Speeches” aims to: (1) find the types of pronouns; (2) analyze the referents of the pronouns found; (3) explain how Emma Watson uses the pronouns as persuasive devices in HeForShe campaign speeches. Qualitative method with purposive sampling technique was applied in this research. Population of this research was all pronouns found in the speeches, while the samples were first, second, and third person pronouns that showed responsibility, involvement, and otherness.
To analyze the data, Discourse Analysis approach and two theories of pronouns were used. First, grammatical theory of pronouns by Collins was used to find the types of pronouns and the referents. Second, political theory of pronouns by Beard and Wales was used to analyze how Watson uses the pronouns as persuasive devices.
The result shows that there are 222 of first, second, and third person pronouns found in the speeches which belong to personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, and reflexive pronouns. Then, the referents of the pronouns and how they are used as persuasive devices are varied depending on the context. First person pronouns are used to take responsibility, show involvement, share responsibility and state otherness. Then, second person pronouns are used to share responsibility and show involvement, while third person pronouns are used to show otherness.
