Abstrak :

Debate.
The research entitled "An Analysis of Overlap Occurrences in the 2012
USA Vice Presidential Debate" aims to: (1) analyze type of each overlap; (2)
analyze the reason of each overlap; (3) explain the resolution of each overlap in the
debate. The research used qualitative method for analyzing the main data of the
research. Data were collected from the 2012 USA Vice Presidential Debate, and the
sample was taken from the overlapped utterances in the debate.
The researcher used conversational analysis in pragmatics as the approach
and theory of overlapping talk to answer the research questions. The study firstly
examined the types of overlap in the debate by using Jefferson’s theory. Then, the
reasons were investigated by using Wardhaugh’s theory. For helping to find out
them more, paralinguistic theory was also applied. Finally, the study examined the
resolution for each overlap by applying Schegloff’s theory.
The result reveals that there are 27 total data for overlapped utterances in the
debate which are categorized into three types. For transitional onset, there are 16
data which are divided into three subtypes: four data of terminal onset, seven data
of latched onset, and five data of unmarked next position onset. Then, recognitional
onset has nine data which are divided into two subtypes: four data of item targetted
onset, and five data of thrust projective onset. Meanwhile, there are two data for
progressional onset which are divided into two subtypes: one datum of onset upon
mid utterance silence or silence fillers, and one datum of onset upon mid utterance
stuttering. Moreover, there are two data for overlap which resolved after one beat,
and 25 data for overlap resolved after competition. For the reasons: there are five
data of showing clarification, three data of showing rejection, nine data of showing
completion, one data of signalling annoyance, four data of showing urgency, and
five data of showing disagreement.
