Abstrak :
The research entitled “An Analysis of Flouting Maxims Produced by
Hazel and Augustus in the Movie The Fault in Our Stars” was aimed to analyze
the kind of flouting maxims and to describe the reason why those flouting maxims
happened in the Fault in Our Stars’s movie produced by Hazel and Augustus.
The research used qualitative method in analyzing the utterances produced
by Hazel and Augustus in “The Fault in Our Stars” movie as the main data of the
research. The data ware analyzed using theory of flouting maxims by Grice which
included flouting maxim of quality, quantity, manner, and relation. In analyzing
the data, the researcher used some steps. They were data reduction, data display,
and data conclusion.
The result of the research shows that the researcher found 32 total
utterances of flouting maxims produced by Hazel and Augustus. The
classifications are as follow: Flouting maxim of quality 14 utterances, flouting
maxim of quantity 4 utterances, flouting maxim of manner 5 utterances, and
flouting maxim of relation 9 utterances. Thus, flouting maxim which mostly
occurs is flouting maxim of quality with 14 utterances. In addition, the general
reason of why those flouting maxims occur is because the two characters of this
movie often deliberately fail to obey the maxims to show their indirect meaning.
