Abstrak :
A study entitled “Code Switching and Code Mixing in Language use at
Danghiyang Silihwangi West Java Association of Purwokerto”. This study aims to
describe forms and backgrounds of code switching and code mixing used by the
members of Danghiyang Silihwangi West Java association in speaking processes
between members.
This study is classified into a descriptive research. The data source is obtained
from talks of members of Danghiyang Silihwangi West Java Association of
Purwokerto containing Indonesian, Sundanese, and Javanese code switching and code
mixing.
Data are collected using a observation method. Some techniques are used,
such as tapping as the basic, free listening while speaking, recording, and writing as
the further. The analysis uses an equivalent method. The element selecting technique
is used as the basic, while the comparing-distinguishing relational technique is the
further.
This research conclusion shows that there are three code switching forms,
including Indonesian to Sundanese, Sundanese to Indonesian, Indonesian to Javanese.
The code switching backgrounds are to reduce distance, have more relaxing talking
atmosphere, express anger, avoid rude Indonesian or Sundanese expression forms,
respect older members, ensure speaking partner conditions, due to the presence of
third party, speaking topic changes from personal to associational matters, speaking
partner influences in using Indonesian, and others’ talks quoting.
There are three code mixing forms, including Indonesian with Sundanese,
Sundanese with Indonesian, Indonesian with Javanese. The code mixing backgrounds
are due to host respecting guests, strong Sundanese influences, joking, to melt
situations, respect a host, and express anger.
