Supervisor 1: Tribuana Sari, S.S., M.Si., Supervisor 2: Mia Agustina Fitria, S.S., S.E., M.A., External Examiner: Eni Nur Aeni, S.S., M.A. Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Jenderal Soedirman University, Faculty of Humanities, English Department, English Literature Study Program, Purwokerto.This research entitled “The Color Transition Symbol Seen on Lois Lowry’s The Giver” aims to figure out the meaning of the color transition in the novel and the effect of the symbols of apple, faces of the crowd, hair, sled and books on the action conducted by the leading character in the novel, Jonas. The researcher used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The primary data is Lowry’s The Giver. Additionally, the researcher used Barthes’ semiotics theory to analyze the denotative and connotative significances and myths generated from the collected data of the symbols.Theories of the psychology of colors and proven theories related to the symbols are also used to analyze the meaning of color transition appears on the symbols. The result of this research shows that gray color contains a more passive meaning as reflectedon Jonas’ actions in the novel;
however, red color gives a more intense effect. Moreover, theresearcher found that the meanings of the symbols are strongly based on the context found in the novel; nevertheless, the contextual-based meanings are also connected to the socio-cultural concepts found in the society.
