Abstrak :
Key words: register, debate community, model of argumentation.
The title of this research is A Register Analysis in Debate Community. This is a case study of register used by debater of Humanities Students English Club (HUDEC) at Humanities Faculty of Jenderal Soedirman University. The objectives of this research are to describe the meanings and types of register used in debate community and analyze the structure of debate speech in debate community of HUDEC.
This research used sociolinguistics approach and employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data source used by the researcher is the speech from debater, tributary comment from adjudicator, and verbal communication from moderator. The data collection technique consists of observation and transcription. The systematic data analysis involved finding out the meaning of registers, analyzing the model of argumentation of debate speech, and drawing conclusion.
The result shows 13 (thirteen) register found. Several registers refer to the position in debate like Affirmative Team or Government Team, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Government Whip, Negative Team or Opposition Team, The Leader of Opposition, Deputy Leader Of Opposition, and Opposition Whip. The rest of registers found refer to the technical term like POI, motion, and clashing point. The registers are in form of noun phrase (11), abbreviation (1), and word (1). The researcher also found part of argument propose by Toulmin; claim, support, warrant, qualifier and rebuttal.
